On behalf of The Robey Theatre Company and East West
Players, we want to thank you for coming to this special co-production
of YOHEN by Philip Kan Gotanda, and directed by Ann Bowen. Our
collaboration is significant on many levels from the play's themes to
the joint venture of an African American theatre and an Asian American
theatre organization to the diverse teaming of key design, technical and
administrative staff.
We are forever grateful to Nobu McCarthy and Danny Glover who have taken
the time out of their successful and busy careers to develop this play
that succeeds on so many levels. Congratulations to Philip Kan
Gotanda who is celebrating a second world premiere opening in January
1999, THE SISTERS MATSUMOTO in Seattle; to Ann Bowen who has brought a
very special kind of sensitivity to this work; and to the diverse design
team of Edward Haynes Jr., Joyce Kim Lee, Doc Ballard, Miles Ono, and
Ken Takemoto who have created a realistic setting for the play.
We are also grateful to you, our audience, who join in our collaboration
and take part in showing the greater Los Angeles community our vision of
partnership and unity. As we head into the next millennium,
collaboration becomes more and more important to the visibility of
organizations such as ours. The development of a new generation of
theatergoers is crucial to our survival. It is also important to
our audiences to invest in organizations like ours who are bringing
communities together in this vast city of ours. The rewards shall
be great for our future.
Another special thanks to Longo Toyota for their contribution to this
special event, and to Heineken Beer for their in-kind contribution.
We hope that many others recognize and support the vision of partnership
that will help to bridge the people of Southern California.
We look forward to seeing you at other productions of East West Players
and The Robey Theatre Company.
Welcome. Enjoy the experience.
